"After education and research, student activities and organizations are the third pillar of this school."
– Vice-Rector emeritus for Education Zdeněk Bělohlav

"According to my personal experience and the experience of many of your predecessors, it turns out that participation in student activities is the best school of life that you can take into account for your studies. It means that you enter adulthood with a desire to change the world around you, to leave a mark and to not settle for average.”
– Rector Pavel Matějka

"UCT Prague aims to accommodate all constructive activities of students, especially those that develop the abilities of (participating) students themselves, student life or otherwise help build a richer and more dynamic community at VŠCHT Prague."
– Rector emeritus Karel Melzoch

A diploma is not enough

The EDUin survey shows that employers look at much more than just educational attainment during interviews. Participation in student associations and senates is a striking part of career success. Why? In an organization, you and your peers experience what it's like to lead a team, manage an organization, deal with partners, promote, manage finances, etc.

You will meet other capable classmates and start to attract people who are interested in similar goals, you may use the valuable experience more in the future than you expected.

Do you have ideas on how to move the university forward, but feel like no one will talk to you? Do you want to join existing projects? Do you want to become a part of the never-ending process of finding the best way to operate the university?

Student senators are your representatives in the management of UCT Prague and in the management of individual faculties, where they defend the interests of all of us and ensure that students have the best possible conditions for their studies. You can contact the student senators whenever you have an idea, constructive criticism, comment or any problem related to the organization of the university or faculty.
[ikona] => [obrazek] => [ogobrazek] => [pozadi] => [obsah] =>
Students are in principle (and by law) an essential part of the educational process. At universities, students are directly involved in making decisions about the school's future through academic senates.

Being a senator is hard work and you can't get much done in one election period, that's why senators join together in a larger body - a college, where former senators, unsuccessful candidates and others cooperate.  There is no need to jump straight into unknown waters - you can get involved in other ways than through candidacy!

Who we are?

The Academic Senate is by law the highest decision-making body of every university and faculty. Its main agenda includes approving the budget and approving the rector's/dean's returns and internal directives. There are five senates in total. One "large" school-wide one (AS UCT) and one "small" at each faculty (e.g. AS FCE). In the large senate, the student chamber has 8 representatives (2 from each faculty in any degree). There are always 4 student representatives in the faculty senates, two doctoral and two bachelor + master students. Elections to the student section of all senates are held uniformly every fall. Students make up roughly a third of all members in each senate. The rest are made up of academic staff of faculties and individual institutes. The current representation of students in senates can be found on the Czech section of the website.

What's in for you?

Being a senator will give you experience of running a university and an insight into what it's like from the other side of the department. You will learn to act in a team and negotiate compromise solutions to problems. If you want to become a senator, nominate yourself in the next elections, which will be held in the fall. If you think you don't have enough experience for this yet, join K3S first and get involved in solving various projects unofficially.

University clubs are an integral part of campus life. But these are not the clubs for the chosen few that you see in American films - our clubs bring together people interested in culture, sport, the arts and other areas. So whether you want to interact with international students, play hockey, take photos, or participate in cultural events on campus, clubs are the way to do it.

[ikona] => [obrazek] => [ogobrazek] => [pozadi] => [obsah] =>

Why join?

Membership in a university club allows you to make valuable friendships outside your study group, year or faculty. It is also one of the most effective tools to develop soft skills such as teamwork, time management or people management. In addition, through your activity you can continuously clarify what role you are most comfortable with in teamwork and move forward in the process of self-discovery, which will be very important for job selection!

How to join a club?

Simply find the contact details of the leader under the relevant society and get in touch via any communication channel. You have nothing to worry about, new members are always welcome.

How to start a club?

You need to register a new society at the Counselling and Career Centre (940). It's easy: just have a few people (min. 2) in the party, a clear purpose and a completed application form. There is NO need to form an organization in the legal sense. The registration form and detailed information can be found in the Rules bellow.

Support and facilities

The Counselling and Career Centre (CCC) provides support to university clubs in a variety of areas.

Do you feel like doing something but don't know exactly which way to go? Drop by our office anytime to discuss your ideas and help direct you to one of the societies or start a new one.

Societies can also contact CCC if they are facing disagreements, differences of opinion or staffing crises, or if they are unsure about technical facilities and production issues.

The CCC allows all registered societies to set up a team in the MS Teams application. If you are interested (and you are the leader of a society), please write an email to the Secretary or the Head of the Computing Centre to request the creation of Teams and add a link to your society's registration form. Someone from K3S will be happy to show you how Teams works!

Faculty rivalry at UCT Prague has been going on for a long time, but with the advent of the Šípek's Faculty Championship, faculties have the opportunity to compete in sports and other disciplines officially!

Throughout the academic year, our 4 brilliant faculties battle it out to score valuable points in a variety of events from chess tournaments to dragon boat races. The faculty that has the most points at the end of the year can then boast of the supreme championship, unquestionable proof of their superiority and the travelling Šípek's Cup all the next year!

And who is this Šípek? The decision of who to name the cup after was very simple. The legendary founder of Kachekran, who was instrumental in boosting the social life of our alma mater, Associate Professor Milan Šípek, agreed to become the patron of the Cup.

Disciplines:
(chronologically during the academic year)

Team size and scoring may vary for each discipline (see individual discipline descriptions). Anyone can participate. Faculty staff participation is not excluded. We strive to have an equal participation of women and men.

Teams are led by faculty captains and draft participants primarily from faculty FB groups. If you want to participate in any event and support your faculty, contact your captain(s) for 2022/2023:

Logo VitriolDo you have a favorite teacher at your school who has always motivated you, influenced the direction of your scientific career, or did you just always look forward to their lectures? Do you want to acknowledge his/her work? Nominate him/her for the Vitriol Student Award!

[ikona] => [obrazek] => [ogobrazek] => [pozadi] => [obsah] =>

What's going on?

The Vitriol Student Award is an award given by students to the most popular teaching and non-teaching staff at the UCT. The aim is to recognise the work of those who innovate teaching beyond their job responsibilities, who can enthuse us about their field with their passion and knowledge in lectures, and who are a support and mentor whenever we need it. As a sign of respect for their work, which we do not overlook and deeply appreciate, we are recognizing five faculty members as well as one non-teaching staff member each year starting in 2021. In doing so, we would also like to acknowledge the work of people in the dean's and rector's offices, which are equally important to the running of the school and the needs of the students.

How does it work?

The award consists of four consecutive steps, which are managed by an organising team led by K3S.

The first step is the nomination of candidates for the award, in which any of you can get involved in the form described in the following section "How can I get involved?". Awards are given in six categories according to the official school structure:

Teacher - FCT
Teacher  - FET
Teacher  - FFBT
Teacher - FCE
Teacher - non-faculty departments
Non-teacher - Administration of University Facilities, Rector's office and Dean's offices

The second step is to select a shortlist of candidates for the purpose of electing the winner, which will be done by the organizing committee based on the information received from the students during the nomination process. This step results in a list of five to six candidates for the award in each category, supported by relevant arguments.

The third step is the secret ballot of the winners in each category. The voters are student senators from all academic senates, who will decide on the awardees in the following composition:

Teacher - FCT (6 students - 4 AS FCT + 2 AS UCT)
Teacher - FET (6 students - 4 AS FET + 2 AS UCT)
Teacher - FFBT (6 students - 4 AS FFBT + 2 AS UCT)
Teacher - FCE (6 students - 4 AS FCE + 2 AS UCT)

Teacher - All-School Institutes (8 students from AS UCT)
Non-teacher - Administration of University Facilities, Rector's office and Dean's offices (8 students from AS UCT)

Details of the election and the criteria used by the electors are given in the Rules for the Vitriol Student Award.

The fourth step is the award ceremony at the Chemists' Ball, during which each awardee receives a trophy and a diploma. The main student award trophy will be kept in the school premises where it will be used to present the winners and their medallions.

Results

The winners of the third edition of the Vitriol Student Prize 2023 in 6 categories were:

Best teacher of FCT

prof. Ing. Radek Cibulka, Ph.D. from the Department of Organic Chemistry

Professor Cibulka has long been one of the most highly rated teachers not only at the faculty, but at our entire university. In surveys, students particularly highlight his friendliness towards students and his ability to present even complex issues in an understandable and engaging way. In addition, the laureate has demonstrated that he can work with both small and large study groups with high standards. Last but not least, he has made efforts beyond his duties and has been actively involved in the Academic Senate, where he has also been supportive of students over a long period of time, thus helping to create a better atmosphere between students and academics, thus further promoting the improvement of the conditions for successful student learning at the school.

Best teacher of FTE

Ing. Hana Kujalová, Ph.D. from the Department of Water Technology and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Kujalová is known for her helpful and supportive approach to teaching and laboratory management. She has a wide range of knowledge in theory and practice which she passes on to her students. She gives her utmost attention to her students beyond her duties, not only in supervising their final theses.

Best teacher of FFBT

doc. Ing. Petra Lipovová, Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology

Associate Professor Lipovová was clearly ranked first in the number of nominations. She regularly receives excellent ratings in student surveys, she supervises a number of student papers, and pedagogy is very high on her list of priorities. She is constantly striving to improve the quality of teaching, both in her own work and as chair of the pedagogical committee of the AS UCT Prague. For these and other merits, she has already received the Rector's Award last year and with this year's award we would like to express our gratitude for her work on behalf of the students of UCT.

Best teacher of FCE

Mgr. Markéta Zikmundová, Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Cybernetics

Dr. Zikmundová manages to make students understand in a humorous, yet high-quality way that studying mathematics does not have to be scary, but can also be fun. With her enthusiasm and energy, she can light up the whole class. She treats her students as equals and if one is not doing well, she can encourage and motivate them, and not just by handing out sweets. When a student reaches a desired goal and accomplishes things they thought were impossible six months ago, Dr. Zikmundová experiences the emotion with the student and lets them know how proud she is of them.

Best teacher of non-faculty departments

RNDr. Jan Havlík, Ph.D. from the Department o Chemical Education and Humanities

Dr. Havlík received very positive feedback in the nominations and student survey, and has long been dedicated to the popularization of chemistry and modern approaches in didactics. The winners of the second edition of the Vitriol Student Prize 2022 in 6 categories were:

Best teacher of FCT

Ing. Petra Ménová, Ph.D. from the Department of Organic Chemistry

Ing. Petra Ménová, Ph.D. is highly appreciated by students for the high quality of her teaching, materials provided as well as her individual approach to students. The committee sees the Vitriol Award as an opportunity to recognize both deserving and experienced teachers for their long-standing and high-quality educational activities, as well as an opportunity to recognize and further motivate young promising teachers. Dr. Ménová has also been involved in the organization of the Chemistry Olympiad for a long time. The committee appreciates the very positive response of Dr. Ménová to her evaluation in the student survey.

Best teacher of FFBT

Doc. Ing. Jan Staňek, CSc. from the Department of Chemistry of Natural Compounds

Lifetime teaching performance of doc. Staňek is worthy of recognition. Students attending his courses have long been very satisfied with his original and witty approach to the complex problems of organic chemistry of natural substances. His art of illustrating difficult to grasp topics with simple examples from everyday life helps to awaken students' interest in chemistry, for which doc. Staněk definitely deserves the Vitriol Award.

Best teacher of FET

Dr. Ing. Pavla Šmejkalová from the Department of Water Technology and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Ing. Pavla Šmejkalová has long been known for her human approach to teaching and especially to students. In addition to her teaching and scientific commitments, she is very intensively involved in the modernization of the promotion and representation of the faculty, for example by organizing public events such as Open Door's days of UCT, Scientists' Night and ScienceFest.

Best teacher of FCE

RNDr. Pavel Galář, Ph.D. from the Deaprtment of Physics and Measurement

Dr. Galář has received very positive feedback from a large number of students on his teaching and popularization lectures. Dr. Galář's teaching is delivered in a humorous manner, but at the same time he maintains high quality, necessary level of required knowledge, and manages to cover all the topics needed to pass the course. We very much appreciate his approach to his students, whom he treats as equals. We very much appreciate his own initiative in organizing Nobel Lectures, Physics Demonstrations and organizing SVK (student scientific conference). We wish him every success in his teaching and research career.

Best teacher of non-faculty departments

Ing. Roman Thomas Sedlar, MBA, Msc from the Department of Languages

Very positive feedback from students, able to present teaching in a very engaging way - given that Vitriol is the award for the best teacher, these were found to be the most relevant criteria. Students consider the Language Department to be a very important part of the school and the award to Ing. Sedlar to highlight the important role that language learning plays at the school.

Best non-teaching staff member

Tomáš Filous from the Department of Chemical Engineering

As a laboratory technician, Mr Filous is an integral part and icon of the chemical engineering laboratories. His ever-present humour, which regularly shows itself already during the initial training before the first laboratory task, creates a very human atmosphere throughout the whole course, which is certainly not commonplace in laboratories. It is Mr. Filous's working comfort and human approach that makes chemical engineering labs what they are, a student favorite subject. And remember, especially don't drain the manometric fluid, or you know what you're in for.

Results

The winners of the first edition of the Vitriol Student Prize 2021 in 6 categories were:

Best teacher of FCT

prof. Ing. Petr Zámostný, Ph.D. from the Department of Organic Technology

Prof. Zámostný has an excellent rating and a comparable number of nominations with the other candidates. The following characteristics that distinguish this candidate from the others are also the reasons that convinced us to award the Vitriol Prize:

Although Prof. Zámostný does not teach a Common Core course, he has a large number of ratings and comments in the Surveys. He responds very constructively to all these comments. We are also very positive about the fact that he is not afraid to confront negative criticism, which he is able to accept and work with.
We also appreciate the fact that Prof. Zámostný is currently performing excellently as Vice Dean for Education at the Faculty of Chemical Technology and that he is extremely helpful to students whenever anything needs to be addressed.

Best teacher of FET

Ing. Marek Staf, Ph.D. from the Deprtment of Gaseous and Solid Fuels and Air Protection

Dr. Staf is a professional with a successful career in industry, which he decided to further develop in academia. His lectures are very popular with students, even though they are often in the afternoon. In his lectures, the doctor repeatedly confirms his broad knowledge and human approach to students.  He presents difficult topics in a clear manner and has clearly defined criteria and a fair approach in the examination. He supplements his lectures with extra-curricular excursions and participates in faculty representation, for example in the Academic Senate of the University of Applied Sciences and at open days.

Best teacher for FFBT

doc. Ing. Iveta Hrádková, Ph.D. from the Department of Dairy, Fat and Cosmetics

The committee considers the Vitriol Award as an opportunity to motivate educators to be proactive with students and to present excellent teachers who do not have the support of communication with a large number of students in common core courses. Doc. Iveta Hrádková addressed the committee with her conscientious approach to lecturing, her efforts to meet students and to implement new methods even in times of limited teaching due to the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic. The committee evaluates extremely positively the approach of doc. Hrádková's approach to answering students' comments in the student information system. Last but not least, the committee appreciates her efforts to enrich her lectures with practical experience. We believe that this award will be a motivation for teachers from smaller institutes to constantly innovate their courses, but also a motivation for students to choose courses from these institutes more, because our faculty offers many more teachers of exceptional quality.

Best teacher of FCE

Dr. Ing. Pavel Vrbka from the Department of Physical Chemistry

Dr. Vrbka had a very positive feedback from a large number of students for both online and face-to-face teaching. Other educators could learn from his exemplary readiness for distance learning. Dr. Vrbka's teaching is unique, delivered in a humorous manner, while maintaining a high quality and level of required knowledge. We greatly appreciate his approach to teaching physical chemistry labs, which can perhaps be expressed in just one word, "Chief". His long-standing appreciation of tradition, for example in the form of the now legendary needle printers, should also be held up as an example. With the naturalness inherent in him, the educator is humane, humorous, modest and one certainly does not get bored in his presence.

Best teacher of non-faculty departments

doc. RNDr. Ing. Hana Scholleová, Ph.D. from the Department of Economics and Management

The associate professor had the absolute highest number of nominations and excellent ratings from students in the SIS survey.  Her award can serve as a good motivation for other teachers in new economic fields at the UCT Prague. The committee also appreciated her work during the Covid-19 pandemic and her individual approach to students.

Best non-teaching staff member

Šárka Dintarová from the FET Dean's Office

Ms. Dintarová has an exceptional human approach to her students, and despite her often demanding work with masters and bachelors, she always puts the person first, not a column in a spreadsheet. At the same time, the committee praised the decor and cheerful atmosphere that has long prevailed in the FTOP Dean's Office, as well as the use of social media and contact with students during the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic.
