"After education and research, student activities and organizations are the third pillar of this school."
– Vice-Rector emeritus for Education Zdeněk Bělohlav

"According to my personal experience and the experience of many of your predecessors, it turns out that participation in student activities is the best school of life that you can take into account for your studies. It means that you enter adulthood with a desire to change the world around you, to leave a mark and to not settle for average.”
– Rector Pavel Matějka

"UCT Prague aims to accommodate all constructive activities of students, especially those that develop the abilities of (participating) students themselves, student life or otherwise help build a richer and more dynamic community at VŠCHT Prague."
– Rector emeritus Karel Melzoch

A diploma is not enough

The EDUin survey shows that employers look at much more than just educational attainment during interviews. Participation in student associations and senates is a striking part of career success. Why? In an organization, you and your peers experience what it's like to lead a team, manage an organization, deal with partners, promote, manage finances, etc.

You will meet other capable classmates and start to attract people who are interested in similar goals, you may use the valuable experience more in the future than you expected.

Do you have ideas on how to move the university forward, but feel like no one will talk to you? Do you want to join existing projects? Do you want to become a part of the never-ending process of finding the best way to operate the university?

Student senators are your representatives in the management of UCT Prague and in the management of individual faculties, where they defend the interests of all of us and ensure that students have the best possible conditions for their studies. You can contact the student senators whenever you have an idea, constructive criticism, comment or any problem related to the organization of the university or faculty.
[ikona] => [obrazek] => [ogobrazek] => [pozadi] => [obsah] =>
Students are in principle (and by law) an essential part of the educational process. At universities, students are directly involved in making decisions about the school's future through academic senates.

Being a senator is hard work and you can't get much done in one election period, that's why senators join together in a larger body - a college, where former senators, unsuccessful candidates and others cooperate.  There is no need to jump straight into unknown waters - you can get involved in other ways than through candidacy!

Who we are?

The Academic Senate is by law the highest decision-making body of every university and faculty. Its main agenda includes approving the budget and approving the rector's/dean's returns and internal directives. There are five senates in total. One "large" school-wide one (AS UCT) and one "small" at each faculty (e.g. AS FCE). In the large senate, the student chamber has 8 representatives (2 from each faculty in any degree). There are always 4 student representatives in the faculty senates, two doctoral and two bachelor + master students. Elections to the student section of all senates are held uniformly every fall. Students make up roughly a third of all members in each senate. The rest are made up of academic staff of faculties and individual institutes. The current representation of students in senates can be found on the Czech section of the website.

What's in for you?

Being a senator will give you experience of running a university and an insight into what it's like from the other side of the department. You will learn to act in a team and negotiate compromise solutions to problems. If you want to become a senator, nominate yourself in the next elections, which will be held in the fall. If you think you don't have enough experience for this yet, join K3S first and get involved in solving various projects unofficially.

University clubs are an integral part of campus life. But these are not the clubs for the chosen few that you see in American films - our clubs bring together people interested in culture, sport, the arts and other areas. So whether you want to interact with international students, play hockey, take photos, or participate in cultural events on campus, clubs are the way to do it.

[ikona] => [obrazek] => [ogobrazek] => [pozadi] => [obsah] =>

Why join?

Membership in a university club allows you to make valuable friendships outside your study group, year or faculty. It is also one of the most effective tools to develop soft skills such as teamwork, time management or people management. In addition, through your activity you can continuously clarify what role you are most comfortable with in teamwork and move forward in the process of self-discovery, which will be very important for job selection!

How to join a club?

Simply find the contact details of the leader under the relevant society and get in touch via any communication channel. You have nothing to worry about, new members are always welcome.

How to start a club?

You need to register a new society at the Counselling and Career Centre (940). It's easy: just have a few people (min. 2) in the party, a clear purpose and a completed application form. There is NO need to form an organization in the legal sense. The registration form and detailed information can be found in the Rules bellow.

Support and facilities

The Counselling and Career Centre (CCC) provides support to university clubs in a variety of areas.

Do you feel like doing something but don't know exactly which way to go? Drop by our office anytime to discuss your ideas and help direct you to one of the societies or start a new one.

Societies can also contact CCC if they are facing disagreements, differences of opinion or staffing crises, or if they are unsure about technical facilities and production issues.

The CCC allows all registered societies to set up a team in the MS Teams application. If you are interested (and you are the leader of a society), please write an email to the Secretary or the Head of the Computing Centre to request the creation of Teams and add a link to your society's registration form. Someone from K3S will be happy to show you how Teams works!

Faculty rivalry at UCT Prague has been going on for a long time, but with the advent of the Šípek's Faculty Championship, faculties have the opportunity to compete in sports and other disciplines officially!

Throughout the academic year, our 4 brilliant faculties battle it out to score valuable points in a variety of events from chess tournaments to dragon boat races. The faculty that has the most points at the end of the year can then boast of the supreme championship, unquestionable proof of their superiority and the travelling Šípek's Cup all the next year!

And who is this Šípek? The decision of who to name the cup after was very simple. The legendary founder of Kachekran, who was instrumental in boosting the social life of our alma mater, Associate Professor Milan Šípek, agreed to become the patron of the Cup.

Disciplines:
(chronologically during the academic year)

Team size and scoring may vary for each discipline (see individual discipline descriptions). Anyone can participate. Faculty staff participation is not excluded. We strive to have an equal participation of women and men.

Teams are led by faculty captains and draft participants primarily from faculty FB groups. If you want to participate in any event and support your faculty, contact your captain(s) for 2022/2023:

Logo VitriolDo you have a favorite teacher at your school who has always motivated you, influenced the direction of your scientific career, or did you just always look forward to their lectures? Do you want to acknowledge his/her work? Nominate him/her for the Vitriol Student Award!

[ikona] => [obrazek] => [ogobrazek] => [pozadi] => [obsah] =>

What's going on?

The Vitriol Student Award is an award given by students to the most popular teaching and non-teaching staff at the UCT. The aim is to recognise the work of those who innovate teaching beyond their job responsibilities, who can enthuse us about their field with their passion and knowledge in lectures, and who are a support and mentor whenever we need it. As a sign of respect for their work, which we do not overlook and deeply appreciate, we are recognizing five faculty members as well as one non-teaching staff member each year starting in 2021. In doing so, we would also like to acknowledge the work of people in the dean's and rector's offices, which are equally important to the running of the school and the needs of the students.

How does it work?

The award consists of four consecutive steps, which are managed by an organising team led by K3S.

The first step is the nomination of candidates for the award, in which any of you can get involved in the form described in the following section "How can I get involved?". Awards are given in six categories according to the official school structure:

Teacher - FCT
Teacher  - FET
Teacher  - FFBT
Teacher - FCE
Teacher - non-faculty departments
Non-teacher - Administration of University Facilities, Rector's office and Dean's offices

The second step is to select a shortlist of candidates for the purpose of electing the winner, which will be done by the organizing committee based on the information received from the students during the nomination process. This step results in a list of five to six candidates for the award in each category, supported by relevant arguments.

The third step is the secret ballot of the winners in each category. The voters are student senators from all academic senates, who will decide on the awardees in the following composition:

Teacher - FCT (6 students - 4 AS FCT + 2 AS UCT)
Teacher - FET (6 students - 4 AS FET + 2 AS UCT)
Teacher - FFBT (6 students - 4 AS FFBT + 2 AS UCT)
Teacher - FCE (6 students - 4 AS FCE + 2 AS UCT)
Teacher - All-School Institutes (8 students from AS UCT)
Non-teacher - Administration of University Facilities, Rector's office and Dean's offices (8 students from AS UCT)

Details of the election and the criteria used by the electors are given in the Rules for the Vitriol Student Award.

The fourth step is the award ceremony at the Chemists' Ball, during which each awardee receives a trophy and a diploma. The main student award trophy will be kept in the school premises where it will be used to present the winners and their medallions.

How can I get involved?

As a student, you can nominate teaching and non-teaching staff who you think deserve to win the award. Each student can make 6 nominations, with a maximum of 1 in each category. A nomination form must be completed for each nomination separately, you can submit up to 6 forms for 6 different categories if you are at your full potential. The nomination form is available online only. When nominating, be sure to comment on why you think your favourite should win. The comment is one of the award criteria, so it's really important to fill it in. You can nominate your candidate until September 30.

If you are not sure which category your nominee belongs to, you can always check the University's organisation page or write to the organisers.

[ikona] => [obrazek] => [ogobrazek] => [pozadi] => [obsah] =>

Who are we?

K3S - czech abbreviation of Collegium of Student Senates and Clubs - is an advisory body to the Student Branch of the University's Academic Senate. It brings together active students from all corners of the school, both from the "political" - senate level and the "civic" - university club level. However, anyone who is interested in helping can participate. The main purpose is to coordinate the implementation of student interests across the school, from events to pedagogy to architecture.

What's in for you?

Broad awareness of and influence on events, insight into the political reality of things. The opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, regular contact with the most active. Opportunities and benefits. References and experience strong for any future, be it related to leadership, innovation, reform, influence, politics, representation, lobbying.

First Wednesday K3S

On the first Wednesday of each month, a large information meeting is held to summarize all the important items from the previous month's meetings. "First Wednesday" takes place at 4:00 pm in the Rector's Conference Room in Building A (A181) and, like regular meetings, is open to the public.

Meetings continue during the school closure, they have just moved to Teams, see Communications.

K3S meetings

K3S (Collegium of Student Senates and Clubs) meets every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Historical Library on the second floor of Building A (A201). Meetings are open to the public and anyone can attend. Meeting agendas are usually posted at least one day in advance on Microsoft Teams, the K3S members' communication platform.

Meetings continue during the school closure, they have just moved to Teams, see Communications.

Communications

K3S communication is mainly done in the Microsoft Teams application, which is freely available to all students or academics of UCT. Access to the application can be obtained via this link after approval by the Secretary.

K3S Secretary

The secretary of K3S takes care of the running of K3S and the organisation of meetings. The secretary is always "elected" on the First Wednesday from among the volunteers. The form of election is by agreement among the volunteers. The Secretary holds office for 1 month until the following First Wednesday. The office of Secretary may be held for more than one consecutive term if desired. Due to the prospective nature of the position and the not inconsiderable financial remuneration, no replacement is foreseen and therefore this situation is not addressed in any way. The duties of the Secretary are listed below.

 Tasks of the Secretary

  • To convene the Wednesday meetings
  • To update the K3S mailing list
  • To draw up the agenda for meetings
  • Moderate Wednesday meetings
  • In the event of absence, arrange for an adequate substitute
  • To check and expedite the progress of projects
  • Set the agenda for the following first Wednesday
  • Ensure the promotion of the First Wednesday and its outputs
  • Organise the "selection" of the next Secretary
  • Assisting and "training" the successor secretary
  • Arrange to change the Secretary's information here on the website

Outbound meeting

Each year the most active of K3S leave Prague and go into temporary isolation. There, without distraction, they work on current issues - from studying the necessary materials to discussing them with all involved to concrete deliverables.

Active projects

Carbonline

The idea of at least partially moving the popular Carbon to an online environment came shortly after the real Carbon had to be physically closed for pandemic reasons. Today, Carbonline is one of the already established platforms where older students either pass on useful information to their younger colleagues (tips for online teaching, advice on writing bachelor theses) or simply spend time together in a relaxed way and socialise in an era when face-to-face contact is noticeably lacking for many people (pubquizzes, smaller online games, etc.). Lukáš Kamenský, Blanka Pilátová, Vojtěch Domín

Evaluation of teaching using reference groups

Student feedback is an important part of teaching. It helps teachers to better determine the level of understanding of the material discussed by students. At the same time, it provides suggestive comments on the form of teaching or the clarity of study materials. The project of evaluation of teaching by reference groups provides a comprehensive concept for regular feedback during the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester, students elect a reference group to collect comments and suggestions from students throughout the course, which are then formulated twice a semester into a report that is submitted to the teacher. The aim of the project is to help reduce the barrier of communication between students and the teacher and to report on the status of the course during the course. Pilot project - summer semester 2020/2021. Elena Šulcová

Digitalization of administration

The project focuses on the simplification and computerisation of administration, which is unavoidable in our environment. We started by rethinking and eventually abolishing the mandatory indexes, but ideas such as completely digital semester enrolments, electronic certificates (for studies, interruptions or terminations), applications or electronically sealed diplomas are still highly topical. In collaboration with the Academic Senate's Committee for Education, we are working to maximize the potential of SIS to facilitate day-to-day operations for students as well as for dean's offices and other departments. Lukáš Kamenský, Matěj Malý

Self-payers

This project focuses on our foreign colleagues who, despite paying for their studies at our school, do not receive the same quality and attention as other students. The initial intentions of this project were to bring their issue to life, to bring to the attention of especially the leadership among academics and active students that this problem still exists, and to try to start addressing it. The essential outcomes were to actively support the self-payers to compile the points that they lack at the school, to help them to set up a communication platform where they would interact within their association (founded in 2020) "International Student Association (ISA)" (similar to K3S), to help them to set up an initial plan to address the issues and to start addressing certain issues themselves within our ranks (e.g. organisation of their support, social background etc.). At the moment, the further progress of the project depends on the start of the ISA activity. Markéta Nováková

Unification of the electoral rules of the senates

After a more thorough study of the Election Regulations, we have discovered a number of errors and inaccuracies in them. So we formed a working group to rework the Regulations. We proceeded on the basis of the developed Subject Matter Plan, which was intended to improve and simplify the elections from the students' point of view. After discussion with the Legal Department of UCT, a proposal to amend the Election Regulations of the AS of the UCT Prague was finally raised at the AS meeting, where the proposed changes were adopted without comments (April 2021). The Rector forwarded the document to the Legal Department for incorporation. Once it is published, there will be a discussion on the change of the Regulations at faculty levels that have specific requirements that will need to be argued/incorporated into the documents. The ideal is to have only two Regulations, one for the AS UCT, the other for the Faculty Senates. The changes are mainly aimed at the student sections of the senate. Matěj Malý

Facilities for clubs, facilities for active students

One of the longer-term efforts of K3S is to acquire fixed premises that will serve as a background for active students, for activities of clubs, their meetings, exams, etc.

E-sports / online-gaming

The idea of e-sports and online-gaming in general has started to develop more and more at our university, understandably, with the advent of the pandemic situation. After setting up our own space on discord and a few isolated participations in inter-school tournaments, a large community of gamers from UCT gradually started to emerge. In particular, it came to the fore during the first school e-sports tournament in the Šípek's Championship (SS 2021), which showed a high level of interest in the field. Better and bigger tournaments, leagues, a separate association... the future is clearly open for e-sports! Miroslav Hala, Lukáš Kamenský

Surveys and student award

The semester-long student survey project is one of those never-ending ones. It is not one of those tasks with a clear solution or one that ends with a great event. The results come in small steps, but that's the beauty of it. We feel it is important that the teaching is constantly innovated for future years. In addition, new accredited programs are currently in their second year, and like any new thing, these programs need some fine tuning. Teaching is run for us and how else can we as students participate in improving it other than by giving feedback! In past years, we have held student discussions regarding the most problematic courses in order to add quantitative data to specific issues. These were then discussed directly with the course supervisors. However, this pandemic year has been a much more difficult challenge for pedagogy.

On behalf of the student survey group, we have been trying to make communication between the tutors and us students more accessible from the very first moment of online learning. Through the student survey, we identified student circles not contacted by the educator (but also vice versa) and then communicated these results with the school administration. Throughout these complications, we tried to foster a student spirit to minimize student motivation. This semester, we have mapped the issues associated with measuring and writing final papers and again communicated the results with the administration, who are open to our views.
However, any constructive criticism should be compensated with thanks. That is why the second project of our group is the emerging student award for the pedagogical but also for the non-teaching staff of the school! We regret that a school with such a great history as UCT does not have its own student award. The award is currently being fine-tuned and will be awarded from the winter term 2021! PhD web / Electronic signpost for PhDs (ERD)

ERD is a support for PhD students at UCT Prague, which has been operating since 2016. In 2020, a new website was created (phd.vscht.cz), where the ERD has been moved and where information for those interested in a PhD is now available together with information from the ERD (previously only via the intranet) - so everything is available in one place for everyone. This year (in 2021) we will focus on the English version of this website, which will be adapted to the needs of PhD students coming to study from abroad. In addition to these activities, this project includes annual lecture and discussion activities in collaboration with the Councelling and Career Centre, the Communications Department, the International Department and the Science and Research Department aimed at prospective and new PhD students. Soňa Hříbalová

Internal grant agency

An IGA, for short, is one of the ways students can receive funding for science (VIGA), pedagogy (PIGA), and social action (SIGA). K3S has consistently tried to modify the regulations for the announcement of each IGA grant to make the application process as straightforward as possible. For VIGA grants, we request constructive feedback from evaluators that the applicant can learn from, and for SIGA grants we negotiate the broadest possible support. Throughout the year, we collect suggestions from students and societies on what could be improved about the grant awards. Through a student member on the SIGA Grants Council, we will then try to incorporate these changes. Matěj Hušek

Dejvice campus

The idea of transforming the campus of the UCT, CTU and CTF UK from a more or less random and disparate area of schools into a real campus has been on the table for a long time. Now the time has finally come when everything is starting to move - the project is being tackled by a large group of interested institutions such as the schools, Prague 6 and the Institute of Planning and Development of the capital city. Prague, and a supportive group of student representatives from all the schools.

Do you have an idea what you would improve? Is there anything missing that you think a college campus should have? Write to us! Václav Durďák, Vojtěch Domín

Internships, traineeships, Erasmus

One of the aims of K3S is to raise awareness among students of the possibility of an international experience as part of their university studies. These include the Erasmus+ programme, as well as IAESTE internships and the MOBI programme for non-European trips. Due to the current system, students are mostly forced to spread their studies, which a large number of them are unwilling or unable to do. Therefore, student senators communicate with individual vice-deans and the vice-rector for international relations, and together with the international department they devise ways to improve this situation (e.g. "packages" of guaranteed recognised courses, etc.).

If you would like to learn more about the issue or have a suggestion/idea/suggestion, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Matěj Malý

Open Day

How to attract applicants to study at UCT? Is the information given at the stands digestible for high school students? Will they take anything away from the field trips? What can be done differently, better, more welcoming? Open days are a key part of school promotion and we are certainly not indifferent to how they are run. We are actively discussing with the university management and looking for ways to make the ODs as beneficial as possible, regardless of the form (online/present). In the future, we will try to incorporate the new, successful elements introduced last year in the first online version into the hopefully again face-to-face ODs.. Dana Bílková, Vojtěch Šálek

Finished projects

English conference for PhD students

The project has made a request for a coherence of the requirements for fulfilling this learning obligation across the school. A major outcome was the introduction of the course Presentation in English for PhD students, in which students can prepare for the PhD Conference in English (or another conference) under the guidance of Ing. Mgr. Hedvika Matesová. The project was thus completed thanks to the excellent cooperation with our Department of Languages led by PhDr. Ivana Dolejšová. Markéta Nováková

Kitchens

The microwave ovens and kettles in the respirium and "U Miláčka" are an example of a simple assignment but a very complex procedure. After a year and a half of negotiations, it was finally successful, so you don't have to eat your lunch cold.

Code of Ethics

A few years ago, the University of Applied Sciences did not have its own code of ethics. It is a common thing abroad, so the student senators did not spare any effort. Many revisions later and hours of careful wording later, on Sept. 27, 2018, the Etický kodex.

Translations into English

For several years now, we have regularly applied for a teaching grant each year to translate course materials into English using students as translators. We are trying to make it easier for overburdened teachers to produce quality study materials for self-study and Erasmus students. Our long-term goal is to transform translation into a continuous project in which active students can join in at any time and translate any materials that just need to be translated in the context of teaching. Ondřej Dupal, Adam Giurg

Online learning support

The K3S students gave maximum support to the transition to online teaching and helped to bridge the first two semesters of distance learning caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. For example, students set up recording studios for teachers, explained the advantages of distance learning, provided technical support for the MS Teams platform and wrote tutorials for teachers and students on the university website. Eventually, the technical support agenda, and with it the voluntary activity of the students, moved to the faculty level and the project was successfully completed. Once again, it was shown that collaboration between students and teachers on new ways of teaching (MS Teams, MS Stream, distance testing, exams, etc.) can lead to mutual satisfaction. We have gained a lot of experience with distance learning through this exceptional pandemic situation, which should be used in the future, not wasted. Our activity has thus moved from the support of online teaching to the incorporation of the acquired experience and technical background into standard, full-time (or hybrid) education at UCT. Šálek Vojtěch, Šoltys Marek

Indexes

In the context of the digitalisation of administration, the issue of indexes was the first one we focused on (SS 2020). The previous state of mandatory indexes with personal checks at the beginning of each semester placed a heavy burden on both students and individual dean's offices. In collaboration with them, the CCC and especially the school management, we managed to change the concept to a voluntary one along with a complete change of the index itself. Today's index retains the archival function of its predecessor with appropriate pathos, but has been supplemented with less formal or nostalgic elements in a corresponding design. This was the first step towards fully electronic semester entries and other changes. Lukáš Kamenský

Who are we?

The Student Chamber of the Council of Universities represents all male and female students of universities in the Czech Republic. It promotes their interests at national and international level. It strives for cooperation between students and teachers, dialogue with the government of the Czech Republic and public administration bodies, and the development of academic self-government. It organises various events for students and student senators and on November 17 it awards the Jan Opletal Prize.

What does it give you?

Practically what K3S does, but on a national scale. Information from Czech universities and insight into higher politics. The opportunity to make a difference, gain valuable contacts, experience in organisation, (re)presentation, teamwork, lobbying and much more. For some it is also the first step towards a political career.
