Who are we?

We are a group of people who regularly play the collectible card game Magic: the Gathering (MtG). This club aims to bring together other MtG players on campus, whether seasoned veterans, those who haven't played in a while, or complete newbies. Primarily, we will be holding regular meetings where we will play mostly formats like Pauper, possibly Commander or Draft (see FAQ).

What's in for you?

A chance to get acquainted (or reacquainted) with the game and the people who play it. The game itself is thirty years old, but still evolving with each addition of new cards and game mechanics. Each game is different and often full of twists and turns, so there's no shortage of fun!

Events

Regular free play meetings where anyone can come, regardless of ability. MtG is a game where each player needs their own game deck. If you don't have one, you'll be able to borrow one of the featured decks. If you don't know the rules, we'll be happy to teach you.

We are also planning to organize school tournaments or drafts, e.g. in our own little MtG league, where you will be able to win something for good placement.

FAQ

What is the format?

Format is another term for a game mode used in the MtG community. Formats differ primarily by which cards are "allowed" to be played in it. But they can also differ in whether they are for two or two or more players, how big players can build decks, etc.

Commander? Pauper? Draft? What does that mean?

Pauper is a format designed for two-player play. Sixty-card decks are allowed to play (almost) any card that has been released at least once in the history of MtG as a so-called Common, or "common rarity". The advantage of the format is that the cards are inexpensive and the player can play professional-level decks for a pittance. The format is perfect for newcomers and also for the seasoned player who has a lot of unused Common cards at home.

Commander is a format designed for two or more players, where everyone plays against each other, or can play (in the case of 4 players) for example 2v2. Decks of 100 cards are played, where each card may only be played once, unlike other formats where a maximum of 4 copies are allowed = "playset." One is then reserved as a so-called Commander, i.e. a kind of leader of the army represented by the deck. Around his abilities, skills and colours the whole package is then built.

Draft is a tournament format where a deck of forty cards is created on the spot from randomly drawn supplementary decks of cards (called boosters), which are rotated among the players, who draw cards from them to form the strongest possible decks, which they then compete against each other. At the end, the scores from each match are added together to determine the winning order.

I didn't understand any of the answers in the FAQ, what should I do?

Ask someone directly either by chat or in person at a meeting, we'll be happy to help, advise...
